India an Intro

For the complete ignoramus, India covers an area of 3,287,262 square km which is as large as Europe minus Russia . The population of India is more then a billion people, majority of whom practice Hinduism though the country is home to almost all major religions of the world. India is administratively divided into a number of provinces that are by and large controlled by a powerful centre. New Delhi is the capital city of India though there are a number of other big and small cities in the country. However, still India lives in her hundreds of thousand villages which are gradually being integrated with national mainstream. The national language of India is Hindi. However, there are two dozen developed languages spoken in the country by over a million people each. English is quite widely spoken in India and in its own version and makes it probably the largest English speaking country in the world!!. Local time in India is GMT + 5.30 hrs.

Hello Mrs Allen, we have really enjoeyd keeping up with your news and have been most impressed by all the questions and interest in you trip to Durg. The children look very happy. We are most impressed by the speed of communication, when we were at school it would have taken several weeks to communicate with India by letter and would have been very expensive. How wonderful the internet is! Do all of the children and schools have access to computers and internet? We are looking forward to hearing your news when you get home. Have a safe journey.

I asked them both of these questions today. They do get lots of hmoweork. They are expected to work very hard at school, and many of them are also expected to work hard on their parents’ farms too. All of the children learn English as a second language, as well as Sanscrit, an ancient Indian language which is the oldest language in the world. In some secondary schools they are even taught all of their lessons in English, because the teachers there know the children will have much better chances getting work and into universities when they are older if their English is very good. In all of the schools their English is brilliant, which is good because my Hindi isn’t up to much!

No I haven’t seen a cow sanctuary. The cows are etxermely well looked after by everyone. Hindu’s consider them sacred because they give them milk, so they compare them to mothers. One of our guides told us they are considered to be mother goddesses, a bit like Mother Earth . We have seen several with their horns decorated, a bit like painting your nails. They wander around just because they want to, and people let them. They always return home at night and are looked after by their owners, and all the cows we have seen have been in etxermely good condition. It’s an interesting thought though Evie. Well done.

Hi Paige. I am glad you like the rangoli pnaetrts. Children make these wherever we go by using coloured powder on the floor. They are really beautiful. Also at our hotel, everyday they fill a pool with petals in a particular design, which is beautiful. I will put a picture of this on the diary page. Indian sweets are lovely. My favourite are Pista Burfi which are fravoured with pistachios and Ros Gular (I’m sure I haven’t spelt these right!) which are a sort of very light, sweet cheese. They are all very tasty but they are really filling and probably not very good for you. They sell them in lots of the shops on the Belgrave Road in Leicester. Do you remember when we went for our trip there we tasted some? The sweets in India are the same.

That’s really inttreseing. All the Hindu people I have met are vegetarian here. The cows do seem to have a mind of their own. We were in Raipur today which is a really huge city, and even right in the centre of the city there were cows in the middle of the road! I haven’t seen one get run over yet which is amazing.
